HEADWATERS ECONOMICS GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION TITLE: Geodataset Name: amer_bird-rch Geodataset Type: GRID Geodataset Feature: NA GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The dataset contains predicted native landbird species richness. DATA SOURCE(S): Andrew Hansen and Kingsford Jones Scale of Original Source Maps: 1 km cells Date of Original Source Maps: 2004 GEODATASET EXTENT: Northwestern North America (AB, AK, BC, ID, MT, NT, OR, WA, WY, and YK) FEATURE ATTRIBUTE TABLES CODES AND VALUES: VALUE ITEM DESCRIPTION Species Richness (0-9950) DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY: The data were downloaded from http://y2ydata.msu.montana.edu/. The data were developed through the Y2Y Science Grants program with the aim of advancing understanding of the distribution of avian diversity values in and around the Y2Y. The attribute titled "value" represents predictions from a statistical model that was validated through a spatial iterative cross-validation routine. The validation indicated the model explains 76% of the variation in native landbird richness values across northwestern North America. However, although this model fit the data well across the different ecological regions within the study area, it should be noted that validation could only be conducted at locations where BBS routes were located, and the percent of unexplained variation is expected to be higher in poorly sampled areas such as high elevation and northern regions. Also note that there are anomalous values at cells adjacent to large areas of glacier and/or rock. This is an artifact created by "No Data" values in some of the predictor layers at these locations. We clipped out the glacier and rock dominated areas from the bird diversity layers, but the user should be aware that there are still extreme values around the clipped areas.
