Dataset Name: 		US Census County Business Patterns

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: 
County Business Patterns covers most of the country’s economic activity. The series excludes data on self-employed individuals, employees of private households, railroad employees, agricultural production employees, and most government employees. 

The County Business Patterns program has tabulated on a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) basis since 1998. Data for 1997 and earlier years are based on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) System. 

We use these data to show the number of firms and total employment by industry for each county.  

In some cases, we have estimated employment using the number of firms by size and their average sizes at the state level.  For more information, contact Jeff van den Noort.

In some cases, data were supplemented from 1977 to  1985 with data from the University of Virginia Library
