Most of the material for the conterminous United States was collected from James Trumbull's "Coal Fields of the United States, Conterminous United States" map (sheet 1, 1960). The Gulf Coast region was updated using generalized, coal-bearing geology obtained from State geologic maps. The Alaska coal fields were collected from Farrell Barnes's "Coal Fields of the United States, Alaska" map (sheet 2, 1961). An item CoalFieldDescription was added and calculated to "Coal Field - Potentially Mineable" and "Coal Field - Other Uses" based on the Description item in the original layer. The BC data set is the coalflds layer downloaded from http://www.em.gov.bc.ca/Mining/Geolsurv/MapPlace/geoData.htm. The item BASIN was retained. The Yukon data set was procured from Olwyn Bruce of the Yukon Geological Survey. The item BASINNAME was retained. The Alberta data set was downloaded from http://www.ags.gov.ab.ca/website/cbm/viewer.htm. The seven basins were merged together and the item NAME was retained. All of the above datasets were merged together.
