HEADWATERS ECONOMICS GEOGRAPHIC DATA LIBRARY DOCUMENTATION TITLE: Geodataset Name: NA_cbm Geodataset Type: SHAPE Geodataset Feature: POLYGON GENERAL DESCRIPTION: This dataset shows geologic boundaries of undiscovered coalbed methane (CBM) gas accumulations. The estimated amount is reported for deposits in the US and BC. Locations of CBM are available for Alberta, but no estimated amounts are available. Currently, no estimates or locations are included for NWT or YT. BASIN Name of Canadian basin or coal zone. PROV_NUM USGS Province Number. DATA LINEAGE SUMMARY: The datasets were developed by the USGS and can be downloaded at http://energy.cr.usgs/gov and http://energy.usgs.gov/noga. The U.S. values were derived from the summary table cbm.xls. The BC data set is the coalflds layer downloaded from http://www.em.gov.bc.ca/Mining/Geolsurv/MapPlace/geoData.htm. The layer was dissolved on the item BASIN, the field CBM_TCF was calculated based on the map "Coalfields and Coalbed Gas Potential in British Columbia" provided by Mike Fournier, Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, Resource Development and Geoscience Branch, Tel (250) 952-0405, Email Mike.Fournier@gov.bc.ca. The plays and total petroleum systems within each province, basin or region were merged together, and the estimates of oil, gas and coalbed methane for each were than divided by the area of the merged plays to calculate the amount of recoverable resource per square kilometer.
