July 2008 General The Gila region consists of four counties in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona that surround the Gila and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests and associated public lands--Greenlee County, Arizona and Catron, Grant, and Sierra counties, New Mexico. This rural and isolated region features a rich complex of public and private lands. The surrounding communities are starkly different, and some are struggling economically. This report uses socio-economic data to explore how communities are faring, key reasons for their economic differences, and the ways in which the area's natural and cultural resources present economic development opportunities.
